How did you choose your pediatrician (and when did you know it was time to switch?)

Location matters more than you think when you have a sick baby at 7 AM. Pick somewhere close to home off your main morning route. Also check after-hours phone coverage. You do not want a phone service that takes three hours to return a call when a baby has a high fever at midnight. We use a practice near Louetta and Kuykendahl specifically because their triage nurse system actually responds.

We wanted someone affiliated with Texas Children's or Memorial Hermann so records transferred easily. We actually switched once because our first clinic felt like an assembly line. Look at how the back office operates, not just the doctor's personality. Are the sick and well waiting areas genuinely separated? How long is the average wait in the lobby once you check in? If you need paperwork sent to Klein ISD, private speech therapy, or a specialist down in the medical center, how fast is their administrative turnaround? The desk staff and nurse line shape your experience just as much as the physician.

Double check how they handle billing for well visits versus sick visits. Some clinics will bill a simple well-child check as a diagnostic visit if you ask a single extra question about sleep or reflux, which can trigger a copay on your insurance. Ask the office manager ahead of time how they handle routine preventive care billing so you do not get an unexpected bill in the mail later.
