  • Weekly vent thread: tiny ruin vs tiny win

Ruined: ER shift at three in the morning with a broken ice machine and three cardiac admissions at once. Saved: my husband bought the good dark roast grounds and actually left a full pot ready for me when I got home at seven.

  • Real storm prep tips for hurricane season (not just buying 50 cases of water)

No candles. Please, for the love of everything, stop using open flame candles when power drops. Every storm season we get house fire burns in the ER because someone knocked a candle over onto curtains or a mattress while trying to navigate a dark hallway. Get LED headlamps for everyone in the house, including kids. They cost maybe ten bucks online, leave your hands free, and do not burn the house down. Also, if anyone in your house takes daily prescription meds, do not let them run down to two pills before requesting a refill in June or July. Get a two week buffer now.

  • How did you choose your pediatrician (and when did you know it was time to switch?)

Location matters more than you think when you have a sick baby at 7 AM. Pick somewhere close to home off your main morning route. Also check after-hours phone coverage. You do not want a phone service that takes three hours to return a call when a baby has a high fever at midnight. We use a practice near Louetta and Kuykendahl specifically because their triage nurse system actually responds.
