• Parent teacher conference next week and i already know my son is struggling

  As a third grade teacher and a mom, I promise you that we do not set up those conferences to corner you or assign blame. When I sit down with a parent to talk about a child who is struggling with focus or task completion, my only goal is to align what we are seeing so we can build a consistent plan. We know you work hard and we know kids behave differently at school than they do at home. Before you go in, write down two or three specific questions on a notepad. Ask what time of day the behaviors happen most, what interventions she has tried in the classroom so far, and what one specific routine you can mirror at home. Having paper in front of you gives you something to focus on if you feel emotional, and taking notes shows the teacher you are partnering with her. Keep it focused on actionable steps for the next four weeks.

• How do parents actually keep up with board meetings for Klein ISD and Spring ISD? is it worth going in person?

  As a teacher, I always gently remind parents to look at what the board actually handles versus what your campus principal handles. If you have a concern about your specific child's class, grading, or a campus rule, going to a board meeting will not get you a fast solution. Board meetings are for high level policy, district budgets, tax rates, and administrative appointments. If you do go in person for public comment, keep in mind the board members do not engage in a back and forth dialogue with you during that time. They listen, thank you, and move to the next item.

• Moving into klein isd next year and so confused about zoning and open transfers

  From the school registration side of things, make sure your lease is completely finalized before you attempt to enroll your kids. The registrar at any campus will ask for your signed lease agreement along with a current utility bill in your name. If your name is not on the bill yet because you just moved in, they usually give you thirty days to submit it. If you do apply for a transfer, know that the district looks at student attendance, discipline records, and academic standing. Once approved, transfers have to be renewed annually, and they can be revoked if attendance becomes an issue. My advice is to focus on finding a home zoned to a campus you like right off the bat so you do not have to stress about the transfer approval cycle every year.
